Knightly

If practice makes perfect, I should excel at pretending that Heath Miller doesn’t affect me. That I’m immune to that wide jaw, taut body, and the unique woodsy-aftershave-engine-oil scent that makes my ovaries explode.

Since before I could walk, he’s been my champion. My best friend. The one problem I can’t solve. Why? If I tell him I love him, I’ll lose him and his adorable daughter. Maybe the best Christmas gift I can give him—and myself—is to turn in the keys to my B&B and put some distance between us.

Heath

I’ve made my share of mistakes. Lost my MIT scholarship, came home to fix cars and romance Kentbury’s female tourists—until I wound up a single father. For all eight years of Cassie’s life, Knightly’s been my anchor.

I’ve changed. Cassie’s the best part of me, and Knightly’s been there every step of the way. But as Christmas lays its mantle of magic over Kentbury, she drops a bomb—she’s following a dream to New York City. I’ve got one week to do everything, say everything I’ve never dared. To convince my best friend to be mine—ours—for all the holidays to come.

I've been on a binge lately of holiday themed books. I want all the holiday goodness wrapped up in a story to celebrate the season. Not one or two chapters covering the months of November to December. I want page one to The End wrapped up in 'Love Actually' in book form.

Now, truth be told by me over and over again - no angsty angst drama where I am concerned. Fluffy butt unicorns in my corner of the book world. Lo and behold I start reading Claudia Burgoa and my poor heart takes a beating. She writes contemporary romance where the reader (and her characters) are pulled through the wringer. I do burst out of my self imposed box when angst is done well. And followers, Claudia does the angst well.

But wait...She's going to touch my beloved trope??? Should I run from the hills?

Hells to the no! Claudia has written a friends-to-lovers story that will make all the Hallmark-cheesy-holiday-movie-of-the-day happy. Sure there is a bit of uncertainty to the story's main characters must overcome, but you are cheering for the hero.

Knightly is easy to connect with as any woman who has watched on the side lines while her dream is just out of reach. She realizes - with the help of her brothers - it's time to cut bait and move to maybe a different dream.

Cue waking up Prince Charming.

Heath  -well as all men typically are - it's working, not broke, don't see anything to fix.  When his eyes are opened to a potentially life changing problem, it's time to fix it.

Claudia wraps up this delightful story with believable main characters and secondary characters who round out the story. This isn't a story about falling in love - it's one of realizing you are and grab the brass ring.  Knightly is what I love most in a female lead - strength and determination. Heath cares that strong, silent type that you know when he's finally got a clear picture there is no stopping him helping her find happiness. One cannot forget the most important second character - the town of Kentbury. The folks are quirky and yet you can feel the dedication.  There is more story to be had from what this novella introduces.  I hope Ms. Burgoa delivers a future look into this world.

If you are looking for something that has heart, heat and will make you feel better at the end of the pages, do not hesitate to pick up this gem.

5 out of 5 stars.
